The Second Adam
Some of you may not be aware of this, but Jesus Christ is sometimes referred to as The Second Adam. In order to be able to use one sacrifice to save ALL the world, God needed to condemn the whole world as one. That is why we are all judged the same because of the sin of Adam and Eve. If God had chosen to deal with each person’s sin individually then the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ could only account for one person’s sin and not all.
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. [1 Corinthians 15:22]
In the Garden of Gethsemane just before Jesus was arrested, He was praying to God. He was scared, alone and knew exactly what was coming. He asked God if it was possible that He wouldn’t have to go through what was about to happen… but He knew what God was asking of Him. He knew that if He made the decision to obey God and do as He asked He would make it possible for the whole world past, present and future to be saved from eternal death.
And this is the prayer He prayed:
“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.“ [Matthew 26:39]
In that moment, unlike the first Adam, Jesus made the decision to submit to God and do what He wanted – at great cost to Himself.
This prayer was a turning point in history. This prayer saved the world.
Not long after Jesus prayed this, the Roman soldiers led by Judas Iscariot came and took Him away… and we all know what happened next. God’s plan of salvation was about to be fully completed through the death and resurrection of the second (and more obedient) Adam – Jesus Christ.
We all now have the opportunity to be saved from our fate brought about by the first Adam in the Garden of Eden. We all have a similar decision to make. Will we admit that we need a saviour, believe in what Jesus has done and follow Him? Or will we ignore all that we have heard and decide to do our own thing.
One decision brings death, the other life. What will you decide?
